How To Eat Kosher Meals While Vacationing

By Vicki Diaz

Vacationing can seem like an impossible time to insure kosher meals are always available. On the contrary, appropriate meals solutions can be easily arranged, regardless of where the destination is. With some simple meal planning before it's time to leave, a stress free vacation can be achieved without worry about having access to kosher foods.

Vacations to exotic destinations where a resort stay is in the picture, their are most likely already plenty of options on the resort menu. If for some reason there isn't though, one can also search for local restaurants that serve kosher dishes. Now days, there are a large number of dining establishments that have these types of dishes readily available to their patrons.

If a hotel room equipped with at least a kitchenette can be booked, a grocery store in the area will allow the refrigerator to be fully stocked with acceptable food choices. The only other thing that will be needed is a microwave in order to heat meals to the correct temperature. For those looking to save a little money, this is sometimes a much better option anyway.

A vacationer could also take this one step further by bringing along their own hot plate and slow cooker. This opens up opportunities to prepare a wide variety of meal choices that meet strict dietary standards. Food can be tossed into the slow cooker before going out for the day and it will be fully cooked and ready to eat when the day is done.

In the event that there just isn't any groceries stores in the area, one could also bring food along with them on the trip. Some people travel with a piece of luggage and a cooler that is dedicated to transporting nothing but food. While this is also a very cost effective method of eating for just one person, it is especially great when there are several family members that need to be fed.

The method of bringing along all food needed for the trip has the downfall of only allowing for pretty basic eating and this is something many travelers do not want. A different alternative of this method is to either prepare or order several meals before leaving for the trip, freeze them and then pack them to bring along. This method requires the hotel room to have a fridge and a way to reheat the food, however. Some people have went as far as packing their frozen meals in dry ice and shipping them so that they arrive on the same day they reach their destination, as well.

Some fresh items can also be added to the ones brought along by either locating a market to buy from or buy ordering only these types of items from the hotel kitchen. Fresh foods are usually pretty easy to locate and most hotels at least have fruits available for guests. A prepared meal and some fresh fruits or vegetables is nutritionally sound and remains kosher.

Finding kosher meals during a vacation is not nearly as hard to pull off as it seems at first. With just a little bit of planning, any special diet can be achieved. While a few of these methods may seem a bit extreme, they are perfect solutions when there is no other option. What is good to know, however, is that many locations have a variety of kosher friendly business nearby so most vacationers don't have much trouble at all finding foods they can eat while on their trip.
