The Increasing Availability Of Halal Rations

By Jennie Sandoval

Any person who is devoted to his or her religion must consider the ways that may affect various aspects of life. For those who serve in their country's military, this is every bit as true. Many Muslim soldiers serve in the armed forces of their respective countries, and in those situations, Halal rations must be included in their supplies.

The types of food and beverages that are considered proper for Muslims are those that are given the label of "halal." Both the contents of any meal labelled in this way as well as the ways in which they are prepared must be accounted for. If meat is included, for instance, the way that the animal is slaughtered is just as important as what type of animal it is when determining whether or not it qualifies.

Although it might seem that halal and kosher meals are the same thing, they definitely are not. While there may be some areas of overlap, there are requirements for each that are not met in the other. This means that the preparation and packaging of each type must remain separate to ensure that no forbidden foods are included.

It is in the best interests of all soldiers that their meals are as easy to prepare as possible, and halal meals are no exception to this. Like any other type of prepackaged food used by a soldier, special ration packs are available in MRE form. This stands for Meal Ready to Eat, and signifies that the food is easy to prepare under any situation, requiring minimal if any extra effort out of the package before it can be consumed.

The variety of these types of packages has increased as the demand for them has risen. Now, they may be obtained with various combinations of foods, drinks, and sides, all of which comply completely with the requirements set down by religious guidelines. Soldiers, regardless of religion, are now able to have an equal amount of variety in their meals, thanks in large part to the increasing number of manufacturers who create these special rations.

Soldiers often spend their days in conditions of extreme physical activity, and so it is crucial that their meals provide sufficient nutrition to replenish their energy. Halal rations are a match for other types in this, as they contain the same types of nutrients and calories necessary to keep them going. Soldiers who use them will be equally well-fed.

Although most of the people who require rations are connected with the military, there are others who benefit from them as well. Anyone in fast-moving situations, such as emergency workers and firefighters, may find them useful, as will hikers and campers, who must carry their own meals and therefore want them to be compact and lightweight as well as nourishing. Having an easily portable source of food is a great benefit in any of these situations.

Anyone who requires a source of food which is convenient, fast, and easy to prepare can rely on MREs to serve their needs. Special religious dietary restrictions were once a problem in this area, but they are no longer, thanks to increased availability of Halal rations and other special types. All soldiers deserve to have their needs met, and this is a great start to that.
