A Marco Island Vacation On Florida's Gulf Coast

By Carmella Watts

A Marco Island vacation on Southwest Florida's Gulf Coast comes highly recommended for many good reasons. There's no better place for beach holidays, what with miles of sugary white sand beaches, the sunny weather and plenty of opportunities for recreation and water sports. Not to mention the fact that it is the Gulf Coast's primary gateway into the Everglades. Tourists can also indulge in urban pleasures such as shopping and golf.

The ideal way to come up with an interesting and fun-filled itinerary for this trip is to get a handle on the location and the possible tours and tourist attractions in the vicinity. Marco Island is the name of the city as well as the island, which can be found at the southern end of the Sunshine State's west coast. Lumped together with the Everglades and the adjacent City of Naples, it forms the Paradise Coast.

The "Paradise" beaches of Tigertail and South Marco are pretty much packed to the rafters during the summer holidays. The period from January through April is the peak season. The beach resorts dotting this four mile stretch of sandy beaches will be sold out well ahead of time for these busy months, and the room rates will likewise be higher due to high occupancy.

Smart travelers often plan ahead a long time to avoid the crowds by skipping summer and spring break. The sun, sand and waters are just as bright, warm and inviting all year round, so it's actually a pretty good deal. Hotel stays and other lodgings are cheaper and easily available, and there are no tourist hordes swarming the beaches.

Recreational activities are literally available by the boatload, with the most popular ones being fishing charters, dolphin tours and snorkeling expeditions. Collier Seminole State Park is a haven for outdoorsy visitors who can camp out in the park, explore the trails and do some canoeing and fishing. The single-most popular tourist activity in these parts is an Everglades airboat tour, which also includes a foray out to Totch Island.

Those who seek more adventure can rent a jet ski or powerboat. There are many companies offering to help tourists with parasailing and windsurfing. Some visitors will even take shelling tours since these beaches are renowned for their cache of beautiful sea shells.

The golf courses in this part of the state are excellent even by championship standards, and it would be a shame to waste this chance to tee off at the Island Golf Club. The shops, restaurants and boutiques at Marco Walk are likewise a must-visit for shopaholics. Families with children will find Mackle Community Park an ideal place for picnics and relaxing breaks.

In summary, a Marco Island vacation has a lot more to offer than most other beach destinations within and outside Florida. The Gulf Coast has innumerable beaches with the same white sand, sunny weather, soul-stirring sunsets and invigorating ocean breeze. The thing that sets this particular one apart is that the location offers an irresistible mix of urban facilities and pleasures combined with the serenity of unspoiled nature in the vastness of the Everglades.
