Better Availability Of The Kosher MRE For Troops

By Vicki Diaz

When the United States Military went to War with Iraq in 1991 the soldiers were still eating the same MRE or Meals Ready to Eat as they did the year before. But if you happened to be a Jewish or Muslim soldier you would be unable to adhere to your religious guidelines without a suitable Kosher MRE. Regardless of what was available it wouldn't be long before some major changes took place.

The Jewish religion is increasing in numbers. In the military however it is normally something not talked about too often except in circles of close friends or with a chaplain or other religious or authority figure. Regardless of who you speak with, in many cases some would just rather not make a case of the fact that they are Jewish and request a kosher meal.

For those who are not aware, the MRE stands for Meal Ready to Eat. They are the standard issue food packet for troops who are out in the field. They normally contain an entire meal complete with side dishes and are packed in a sealed airtight package. As much effort as was put into the packaging and keeping them fresh it was not until recently that they made an effort at a kosher version.

Even though the troops of the United States military were extremely happy and very grateful, the troops were not the only ones to benefit from this change. These shelf stable, package meals were ready to be provided to first responders on the front lines of natural disasters at home as well as for humanitarian efforts both at home and abroad.

There are a lot of people who do not even know what it means to be kosher. So it is not surprising that no one was fighting for that in the military either. But the troops who would prefer to have the opportunity to keep up with their religious heritage are sure happy that they now have that chance. It is one less thing to worry about in combat.

The fact that a Kosher MRE is now available for anybody who needs one is a big deal. There are a lot of people who Jewish or Muslim faith who in a time of emergency might not otherwise have a choice but to eat normal food and go against their faith. Now they do not need to do such a thing and they can maintain their faith and request a kosher meal.

The meals that come in these packs are capable of lasting for a very long time because of their packaging and how they are made. The food within is very good most people say and comes complete with everything needed for a complete meal. There is a main course, side dishes and desert all included in a meal.

The food got much better over the years and that is evident by the fact that the military was open to change. Having the Kosher MRE is a huge step in the right direction of making the military truly accepting of everyone and their religions beliefs as well as their cultures.
