The Importance of Hospital Refrigeration for patient recovery

By Maureen Templeton

If food weren't kept in refrigeration, food would spoil and if we ate it, we might become sick. It is really important to be aware that refrigeration equipment slows down the bacterial growth. It's a well known fact that bacteria grow speedily at temperatures of approximately 40 to 140 degrees. That is the reason why it is crucial to set your fridge temperature at 40 degrees or below.

Some refrigerators have in-built thermometers and that maintains the internal temperature of the fridge. If a hospital has a refrigerator that does not have this feature, an appliance thermometer should be kept in the fridge to test the temperature. When a power blackout happens and lasts for more than 2 hours at 40 degrees or higher, food shouldn't be eaten.

Hot foods shouldn't be placed in a chiller till they have cooled down some. They can be chilled by putting them into a container of ice or cold water for some time before putting them into the refrigerator. Foods also should be covered prior to being put into the refrigerator. That way they'll keep clammy and won't pick up odours from other foods.

Remember that foods that perish swiftly like lettuce, celery and others should not be kept in the door of the refrigerator. Poultry should really be kept on a shelf inside the carton they came in. Most critically, keep the door of the fridge closed as much as feasible.

In the modern world most fridges don't require a person to defrost them but there are still chillers that must be defrosted. As you begin to defrost a refrigerator, foods must be kept cold. This may be done by putting food into a cooler with a something that is cold like cold packet. Then, continue on with the defrosting and never utilise a knife or sharpened object to get rid of frost. This will damage the inside liner of the chiller.

It is also vital to keep your fridge serviced by refrigeration engineers. Any spills that occur should be cleaned asap; otherwise they will be hard to clean and will cause an odour.
