The Reason Cooking With Can Iron Skillets Should Be Sweet!

By Senaida Heer

If you happen to be similar to me, then you probably were raised preparing and serving everything made from a pot or frying pan sprayed with non stick teflon. This is how most pans are made these days. They are lined with a teflon lining to stop things from sticking on to them. You need to be really cautious with teflon coated pans, and you shouldn't use metal utensils on them or they will get scratched. I am pretty sure you completely know what I am talking about.

Still this was not consistently how pans were. People previously cooked in pans made from cast iron. Teflon didn't happen to be around previously, and they needed something dependable that would be around for quite awhile. Families needed something that could be made only one time, and put to use for everything. And cast iron was the preferred pan of choice.

These type of pans were extremely dependable and could withstand almost anything you could throw at them, from heat to cold, to even being dropped on the floor. People used these types of pans before modern technology. Cast iron pans often endured 50 years or more and were handed down from relatives.

But somewhere down the road, a lot of people let go of our excitement for cast iron. Something a lot more adaptable came along and people did away with pans made out of cast iron. Now most people use cheap pots that are not made very well, that can be washed easily. That is because cast iron requires a little bit of effort. But if you put in that little bit of extra effort, the benefits are really worth it.

I don't mean that everyone has quit cooking with pans made with cast iron fully. Personally I use cast iron all the time, and these types of pans are actually starting to stage a huge resurgence. And that is because we have begun to understand the benefits.

Let me tell you several of the qualities that make cooking with cast iron incredible:

Firstly, foods cooked in a cast iron pan really taste delicious. The food tastes a whole lot more delicious than the things that you cook in a usual teflon pan. That pertains to what is referred to as the seasoning. The pans seasoning comes from never applying detergent to the surface of the pan, and locking in the tastes that come from cooking food in the pan. The pans aromas remain closed up in the pans porous surface, and after some time start to generate deep, powerful tastes in your food.

The second thing is, pans that are made out of cast iron are completely stick resistant if you treat the pans correctly. They do not need teflon or any unusual thing to keep the food from getting stuck. This is because after every instance that you use the pan, you seal your cast iron pan with a fine layer of oil. The cooking grease assists to seal in the seasoning and formulate a sweet surface that won't allow food to stick. In time, this seasoned surface remains long lasting.

And lastly, you can do almost anything with pans made out of cast iron. You are able to prepare vegetables on the stove top, grill steak, or even place the cast iron pan in the oven. Cast iron pans are really resourceful. Quite often I just leave my pan made from cast iron directly on top of the stove so I'm able to use the pan anytime I want.

As I said before, using cast iron has many benefits. I did not really cover all of them in this write up. However if you might be pondering purchasing one, I totally would advise you to. These pans are a perfect investment and will definitely enhance how you cook. Also, cast iron pans will last a lifetime. Hopefully more and more cooks will start using pans made from cast iron just like people did in the 'old days'.
