How To Get Your Freezer Clean After A Power Outage

By John Brown

A power outage can occur during the warmer seasons. The use of fridges, freezers and air conditioners during these times means that accidentally leaving the fridge door open will tend happen.

One common and unfortunate side effect of even the best fridge freezer being left open is the smell of spoiling food. If a freezer was left open for a long time without you noticing it is most likely that the summer heat defrosted your fish and meats and by the time you found it there is nothing but a slimy stinky mess left to clean up. If that sounds familiar, following these simple steps could help you get your freezer smelling fresh again in no time.

1. First, take out all the removable parts of your fridge or freezer. Shelves, doors, drawers, everything that can be taken out should be. Wash them in warm water and soap. Wipe down the inside of the fridge, paying careful attention to the gaskets and door liner. Be sure to rinse and dry all pieces well.

2. Wipe down the inside of the fridge with a baking soda & water solution. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 4 cups (one liter) of water and use it to clean the inside walls of the fridge.

3. Activated charcoal and baking soda can be used to remove smelly odors, so if you happen to have left the fridge door open for too long, this is the perfect solution. Put some charcoal ino flat large pans and then place them into the fridge or freezer to let it absorb the excess odors. Ensure that the freezer is empty and run it on the greatest setting for a couple of days or for as long as possible.

4. Newspaper can also be used to absorb the odors. Simply crumple the papers up and pack them into the shelves of the fridge or freezer. Place a cup or water or sprinkle some of the water onto the newspaper itself. This will help add moisture and increase absorption of the smell. Then turn up the freezer to the greatest setting possible. This will, on average, take between five to six days.

5. Freshly ground coffee beans can also help. Put these into small containers and then reduce the freezer's temperature down to the lowest setting and leave it there for about 2 to 3 days.

If you have tried the above methods your freezer still smells of spoiled meat it is possible that the drippings have leaked into the machines insulation or gaskets. If that is the case you will need to call a refrigerator technician to help replace the insulation and liner.
