By Patricia Clark

No matter where your country belongs, 1st world, 2nd world or 3rd world, there is no place on Earth that is completely free from disasters and calamities such as heavy floods, hurricane, tsunami, earthquake, tornado, terror attack and storm. Preparing for these kinds of disasters and calamities is very important to increase you and your family's chances of survival. When these disasters happen, absence of electricity and gas and insufficient supply of food and water also follows. That's why early planning and preparation for these calamities and disasters are necessary. By preparing the necessary supplies and food little by little, you can stock at least a small amount of emergency foods that will be of great help when a calamity will hit your place.

Factors to consider when planning to store emergency foods in the pantry:

-Starting to store emergency foods does not require you to buy in bulk. If you don't have enough budget to buy a lot of emergency food and supplies, you can start by buying little by little or by including some emergency foods when you are grocery shopping. After a while, your emergency food supply will have sufficient amount of foods and supply that you need but be sure to choose foods tat have longer shelf life.

-The expiration dates of the emergency foods that you stored should always be checked to ensure that you will be able to discard those that are expired already.

- Storing your emergency foods in a cool and dry place is recommended. Also make sure that your pantry or storage room or area is free from insects and rodents to be sure that your stored foods will not be contaminated.

-Our body needs water in order to live and survive so it should be a part of your emergency food and supplies storage.

-Try to avoid foods that are difficult to prepare, unhealthy and as much as possible those that require refrigeration. When you are in a calamity or emergency situation you don't have all the time in the world to cook your food. Also, choosing energy-providing and energy-boosting food is advisable to make sure that your body is well-provided with the energy it needs especially in emergency situations.

-Be sure to include essential things that can be very helpful during emergency situations such as emergency medicines, battery, flashlights, blanket, emergency lights and matches.

-Make sure that you include foods that are age-appropriate to all members of your family. If you have an infant family member, be sure to store milk or baby foods. That way, all your family members will be able to eat when a disaster or calamity happens.

-Checking your food and supply storage once in a while is very important. You have to check if all your food supplies are still intact and free from contamination and if there are any food supplies that are about to expire or have already expired.

-It is also important to store emergency foods that would be enough for you and your family's consumption for at least 72 hours or longer. Once disasters happen, you will not be sure when you will be able to get foods and supplies again so better be ready with enough foods and supplies to sustain you and your family's needs.

Finding time to prepare emergency food storage is important to be sure that you and your family have a greater chance of surviving any calamity or disaster that may happen. Planning and proper preparation plays a key role in your survival of any emergency situations thus you have start doing it as early as possible.
