It is the ceiling of a custom wine cellar that should be given more attention with regard insulation, because it is through the roof or ceiling that most of your energy is lost during the warm seasons. Ideally, the ceiling of your wine cellar should have at least R-19 insulation all the way around. The door, interior ceiling and the walls should also be well insulated, using a material that is resistant to rot and mildew.

A quality wine cellar refrigeration system is also essential to wine storage. For wine to age tastefully, it needs to be stored in a temperature within 55 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit and a humidity within 50% to 70%. A good wine cellar refrigeration unit can provide this optimal environment.

A good custom wine cellar should not have condensate forming on its walls. To prevent condensate from forming, you need to have vapor barriers installed. Install 6 to 8 mil of plastic sheeting on the warm side of your cellar insulation.

A good custom wine cellar has durable wine racks installed. There are various kinds of wine racks on the market. Wine racks are categorized according to material that they are made of (wood or metal) and according to type (standard or custom). Choose according to your personal preference.

Lastly, it is important that your custom wine cellar has good lighting. Good lighting will not only make the ambiance of your storage room more elegant, it will also make your cellar more functional. You can have dimmer switches so that you can control the brightness inside the cellar according at need. It is very important to have proper lighting, because too much light produces heat that can damage your beloved wines.
